Hypersonic wind tunnel testing using FLIR SC655 thermal imaging camera

At the University of Manchester they use a FLIR SC655 thermal camera to test friction and heat dissipation in prototypes. In the hypersonic wind tunnel, speeds of Mach 5 are exceeded, posing a challenge for the tested designs, which must be able to withstand the high temperatures reached at critical points. Using the FLIR SC655 thermal imaging camera and a germanium infrared window, the researchers are able to measure the temperatures reached inside the tunnel.
